The street marathon test event for the Rio 2016 Olympics was rated a success by athletes, by the Rio 2016 Committee, and by Brazil's Navy, which took the opportunity at the event to try out its own task forces for the Olympics.
The winner of the marathon test event held on Sunday (Apr. 10) was Márcio da Silva, who completed the 42.195 km course in 2h31m22s. The women's event's winner was Marta Magna dos Santos, recording a time of 3h37m14s. The race started and finished at the Sambadrome, downtown Rio.
The competition provided the Rio 2016 Committee with an opportunity to see how the marathon route and signage would work, as well as evaluate the impact of the competition on local life. The test event was rated as successful, with athletes giving it the thumbs-up despite the hot weather.
The 37-kilometer course ran through premises of the Navy, who took the opportunity to try out the operation of task force groups that may be working at the Olympics. Vice Admiral Leonardo Puntel was satisfied with the outcome. “We had a very positive interaction with the Organizing Committee. About 90% of the Olympic Marathon ran within our area of responsibility, where we worked with our staff running command and control tests,” he said.
