The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning today (Jun. 21) on the sanitary and safety risks facing travelers in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic and Paralympic games, which are due to start on August 5. Among the recommendations made by the UN-linked association is: not going out at night, avoid dangerous areas and traveling by oneself, and only take licensed taxis and buses at the airport.

Other risks for travelers listed by the WHO are car accidents and heavy rains, which can claim victims.

The warning mentions mosquito-born infections such as dengue, chikungunya fever and Zika virus. To prevent infections with Zika, the organization recommends repellents and condoms. Pregnant women are advised not to go to Brazil.
