A Brazilian Air Force (FAB) Hercules craft leaves Brasília for Port-au-Prince next Friday (Oct 14) carrying humanitarian aid for Haitians displaced by hurricane Matthew. The cargo consists of 75 25-square-metre tents donated by the National Civil Protection and Defense Department of the Ministry of National Integration.

According to the ministry's press office, the tents are intended to provide a shelter for families who lost their homes with the passage of hurricane Matthew on Oct. 4. The United Nations reports 1.4 million people were affected by the disaster in Haiti. With winds reaching 235 kilometres per hour, the hurricane has also caused devastation in other parts of the Caribbean and Southeast US.

Brazil's humanitarian aid to Haiti is an integrated effort by various government agencies led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. More basic need items are planned to be sent in the coming weeks, including humanitarian kits and medicines.
