Roraima government says it does not need federal aid "at this moment"
After the riot that killed 33 prisoners at the Monte Cristo agricultural prison (PAMC), in the rural area of Boa Vista, President Michel Temer offered federal aid to Roraima's government.
In a note, Temer expressed his grief for the incident, demonstrated his solidarity with the state's population, and reported that "the federal apparatus is available" for state Governor Suely Campos to aid during security actions.
According to the statement released by presidential office, in a telephone conversation with the president, the governor said that the situation in the prison is under control and that "the federal government does not need to act in the state at this moment."
Also according to the note, the governor thanked the federal government for releasing $14 million from the prison fund during the last week of 2016 for the construction of a new prison unit and for purchasing equipment and artillery for the security sector of Roraima.
"We have agreed that the state authorities will maintain regular contact with the Ministry of Justice to exchange information on the security situation in Boa Vista," read the presidency's note.
