Eight people accused of being involved with terrorist organizations arrested in Brazil as part of the Federal Police's Operation Hashtag in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympics were convicted Thursday (May 4) by Judge Marcos Josegrei da Silva from a federal court in Curitiba.

Investigators concluded they carried out activities between March and July 2016 to promote Islamic State terrorist organization on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The judge upheld the allegations of the Federal Prosecution Service and sentenced the defendants for promoting criminal organizations, recruiting for terrorism, and criminal conspiracy.

The judge ruled that Leonid El Kadre de Melo, Alisson Luan de Oliveira, Luis Gustavo de Oliveira and Fernando Pinheiro should remain jailed because they would pose threats if released. The other convicts, Hortencio Yoshitake, Israel Pedra Mesquita, Levi Ribeiro Fernandes de Jesus and Oziris Moris Lundi dos Santos Azevedo, were allowed to appeal the conviction at liberty.

The convicts used closed groups on Facebook to share extremist content and plot attacks in Brazil.
