Battalions from the Rio de Janeiro Military Police (PM) Special Operations Command are launching today (19) more operations in six different favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Among them is Rocinha, in the west, where gangs have fiercely fought over the control of drug traffic since last weekend.

The crackdowns started yesterday in the city's north and downtown areas, when a suspect was killed and three people were arrested. Also reported is that three residents were injured in the crossfire between police and drug dealers. The police also found carbonized bodies.

The Battalion of Operations with Dogs (BAC in the original acronym) has been charged with the Chapéu Mangueira and Babilônica slums, in Leme, an upscale district in south Rio, where guns and drugs were confiscated.

Students with no class

The clashes led the city to suspend the activities in 12 schools, six nurseries, and a space for child development, leaving over 6 thousand students with no class.

Most students live in Rocinha, the country's largest favela, where six schools and two nurseries were closed, affecting over 3,300 students.
