Argentina orders arrest of 61 January 8 Brazilian fugitives
The Argentine courts have issued arrest warrants for 61 Brazilian fugitives facing extradition requests from Brazil for their involvement in the anti-democratic acts of January 8 last year.
The decision follows extradition requests sent by the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires to the Argentine chancellery, under the order of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur for the January 8 criminal proceedings.
On Thursday (Nov. 14), Buenos Aires provincial police made the first arrest of a fugitive in the city of La Plata. According to authorities, Joelton Gusmão de Oliveira, 47, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison in Brazil, was taken into custody.
Approximately a year ago, Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the release of Joelton Gusmão de Oliveira under precautionary measures, including the use of an electronic anklet. The ruling also prohibited him from leaving the country.
In February of this year, Oliveira, along with 14 other defendants, was convicted for his involvement in the January 8 acts. The charges included the violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempting a coup d'état, qualified damage, destruction of protected heritage, and participation in an armed criminal association.
According to the police report, Oliveira was detained for suspicious behavior in one of the streets of La Plata. Upon verifying his identity, the Argentine police discovered an active arrest and detention warrant issued by the Brazilian justice system.
