Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has flown to New Delhi, capital of India, where he is expected to attend the 18th summit of the G20—a group encompassing the world’s 19 largest economies plus the European Union.

The Brazilian delegation boarded the plane shortly after the Independence Day parade on the Esplanade of Ministries on Thursday (Sep. 7), and is expected to arrive in the Indian city on Friday night (8) Brasília time, or Saturday morning local time. The leaders’ gathering is slated to be held on September 9 and 10.

The assembly is the highlight of G20 activities and should mark the final stretch of the bloc’s rotating presidency, currently held by India, to be taken over by Brazil for the first time on December 1. A series of technical meetings have been held, also at ministerial level, between member nations.

Program

The event includes at least three sessions. On Saturday, President Lula will take part in two of them, one being the One Earth panel, on sustainable development, energy transition, climate change, environmental preservation, and carbon emissions.

The second is dubbed One Family, concerning inclusive growth, progress made on the sustainable development goals, education, health care, and women-led development.

On Sunday (10), the third sitting is scheduled, entitled One Future, with a focus on technological transformations, digital public infrastructure, multilateral reforms, and the future of work.

Presidency

Following the third meeting, a handover ceremony will be held for the group’s presidency. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss his country’s presidency this year. Next, President Lula will close the event by announcing the priorities and challenges of Brazil’s future presidency, which begins on December 1.

Brazil’s rotating presidency of the G20 runs until the end of 2024, when a new summit conference will convene in Rio de Janeiro, on November 18 and 19 next year.

Together, the G20 nations account for approximately 80 percent of the world’s gross domestic product, two thirds of its population, and 60 percent of its territory.
