Brazilian government brings forward COP30 summit meeting

The extraordinary secretary for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), Valter Correia, announced Thursday (Mar. 13) that the summit of heads of state in Belém, capital of Pará, has been brought forward to November 6 and 7.
This stage—also known as the high-level segment—was originally to take place within the official program (Nov. 10–21).
“We’re making it official. It’s Brazil’s decision. Doing it earlier should give us a little more time to think things through, without so much pressure from the hotel chain or the city. It should also help us organize the opening of the COP more smoothly,” the secretary declared.
This will be the first time the high-level segment will take place separately from the official COP schedule. In previous years, the summit of heads of state took place after the official opening, on the first days of the program.
The summit is the moment when state leaders present their national positions in their speeches. The resulting declarations inform all following negotiations.
Infrastructure
The COP organization, the secretary reported, is working with state and municipal authorities to revamp the infrastructure and guarantee accommodation for the 50 thousand or so participants.
A total of 26 thousand new beds will be created in hotels, boats, holiday homes, and lodgings.
More than 30 projects are underway in the Amazon city, in a bid to improve mobility and develop urban and sanitation infrastructure.
