Brazil ships new voting machines for runoff overseas
Brazilian electoral courts started to ship 220 new electronic ballot boxes that will be used by Brazilians voting abroad at the second round of the presidential election, to be held on October 30.
The machines should replace defective ones from the first round, with the remaining 125 dispatched for possible contingencies, preventing the use of paper ballots, which could delay the count.
The electronic ballot boxes started being distributed Thursday (Oct 13) and will be delivered by logistics company DHL.
Brazilian voters worldwide
Under the law, Brazilians outside the country may only vote for president.
In 2022, more than 697 thousand Brazilian nationals are eligible to vote in other countries—up 39.21 percent from 2018. Voting takes place in a hundred countries.
The places with the largest number of Brazilians eligible to vote abroad are Lisbon, Miami, and Boston—with 45,273, 20,189, and 37,159 registered electors respectively. The nations with the largest number of Brazilian voters are the US, Japan, and Portugal, respectively.
