The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change has launched a public consultation on the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Fires in the Atlantic Forest (PPMata Atlântica). Contributions can be submitted through the Participa+Brasil platform until January 13.

In a statement, the ministry said the plan aims to steadily reduce deforestation and fires in the Atlantic Forest while fostering a transition to a sustainable development model. "The initiative also seeks to integrate the fight against deforestation in the biome into the country's state policies, ensuring its impact across various sectors," the statement added.

The Plan

The PPMata Atlântica consists of 13 strategic objectives organized into four key areas: sustainable production activities, environmental monitoring and control, land and territorial planning, and regulatory and economic instruments.

The guidelines were established by a government technical group, created in 2022 and chaired by the Office of the Presidential Chief of Staff. This group is responsible for implementing the Program for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Fires in Brazil.

After the public consultation deadline, the contributions will be reviewed and incorporated into a revised draft, which will then be submitted to the Permanent Interministerial Commission for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation before being released.
