Herb oil effective in killing Aedes aegypti larvae, study finds

Oregano and clove were the final choice among more than 20 plants
A study conducted by the Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC Minas) and the Ezequiel Dias Foundation (FUNED) has confirmed the effectiveness of oregano and clove oil for killing Aedes aegypti larvae. The next step is to develop a larvicide formula that can be commercially available.
The study found the oils can kill the larvae within 24 hours. Researcher Alzira Cecílio expects the scientists will be ready to introduce a formula to the industry by mid-year. “Only after we have a larvicide formula can we obtain a patent and begin negotiations with potential manufacturers,” she said.

Cecílio explained their group began to study plants that could eliminate Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are a vector for dengue, Zika, and chikungunya virus. Oregano and clove were the final choice among more than 20 plants. But infusion is not enough for extracting oil from the leaves—it takes specific equipment.
The researchers are considering testing the oil on adult mosquitoes as a later stage in the study, which could result in a new aerosol insecticide or repellant. “But eliminating breeding sites is still the key,” Cecílio maintained.
The purpose of the project is to develop a product that does not contaminate the environment and is safe for contact with animals and even water for human consumption—in water tanks, for example. “We want a quickly-degradable material that does not pollute water but is still effective. Most of the currently used larvicides require careful application and carry some level of toxicity to water,” the researcher explained.
