Brazil to enforce alcohol prohibition on election runoff

At least 13 Brazilian states and the Federal District will enforce alcohol prohibition policies on the election runoff on Sunday (Oct. 26). Since there are no national laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages, a decision will be at the discretion of the Public Security department in each state.

In three states, a ban on liquor sales will be effective as of Saturday (25) – starting at 6pm in Maranhão, 8pm in Amapá, and 10pm in Amazonas; as of Sunday in the early morning hours in the Federal District and Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, Alagoas, Pará, Piauí and Ceará, and from 6am in Minas Gerais, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Norte. No details were available on Prohibition hours in Acre.

Rio Grande do Sul, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Goiás, and Mato Grosso announced that they will not enforce any restrictions on polling day, whereas in Rondônia and Tocantins, restrictions will apply in certain precincts only.

The governments in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Bahia, and Paraíba are still considering their Prohibition policy.
