Opinion polls show Brazil presidential candidates tied
Two opinion polls whose results were published Thursday (Oct 9)—by Datafolha and Ibope—show presidential candidate Aécio Neves (of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, PSDB) with 46% of vote support against his challenger, incumbent Dilma Rousseff (of Workers' Party, PT), with 44%. As the margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points, both contenders are technically tied.
Datafolha's study was commissioned by TV Globo and newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. Blank and spoiled ballots total 4%; voters who did not know or did now answer added up to 6%. It is the first survey released by the institute on the presidential runoff.
Ibope, in turn, heard 3,010 people between October 7 to 8 as part of its research, commissioned by TV Globo and newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. As for Datafolha, the pollster interviewed 2,879 people from October 8 to 9. The reliability rate is 95%.
In the first round of the elections, held on October 5, Dilma Rousseff received 41.59% of valid votes against Aécio Neves's 33.55%. PT's candidate won in 15 states, whereas that of PSDB was victorious in ten.
The second-round runoff takes place on 26.
