Social movements protest for political reform
Members of social movements blocked Avenida Paulista, São Paulo's main thoroughfare, on Thursday afternoon (Nov 13) as part of a demonstration for political reform. Entitled “Against the Right Wing, and for More Rights,” the protest was staged by people calling for urban, agrarian, and tax reforms, who also expressed their views against those who recently asked for a military intervention in the country.
The associations that took part in the protest are the Homeless Workers' Movement (MTST), the Unified Workers' Center (CUT), the Landless Field Workers' Movement (MST) and the Juntos! Movement.
MTST Coordinator Guilherme Boulos explained that social movements should base their agenda on changes for the upcoming years. “We want to make it clear here that we want to talk about an intervention in the path the country has taken, but it's not a military intervention, but a popular one.” Boulos also highlighted the need for a new Constituent Assembly to implement the political reform. “The National Congress won't give up their privileges,” he said.
