President Dilma Rousseff called for “the support of all Brazilians, from the East to the West, from North to South Brazil” to help advance the country. She spoke to the crowd on Thursday (Jan 1st) from a speaker's platform in the outside area of Palácio do Planalto (the presidential palace) during the inauguration ceremony for her second term as president. “As I move forward, I'd like to count on the support and understanding of all of you so I can do even more,” she said.

Rousseff once again said she is planning to change her economic policy, but this should not interfere with her welfare agenda. “We are pursuing tighter economic policies, but that won't cancel out any of your rights, and we're not going back on any of our social welfare commitments. I was re-elected to continue changing Brazil and to continue making the changes you want. And I promise that I will make these changes.”

Rousseff pointed out that throughout her allied predecessor's two successive administrations and on into her first term as president – a total of twelve years – the country has seen important changes. During this period, she said, many Brazilians were lifted out of poverty, bought their first homes, and gained access to higher education and jobs. “We have lifted 36 million people out of extreme poverty, 22 million in my administration alone. Never before have so many Brazilians climbed to the middle class,” she said.

The president closed her address by reaffirming her commitment of advancing the country. “Today, after 12 years of a popular government and major changes, Brazilians are finally empowered to tell me they won't accept a single right less, not a step back, but only more rights and more progress. This is my sacred commitment to you. This is the oath that I take on this plaza today. Long live Brazil! Long live all Brazilian people!”
