Following a meeting with President Rousseff and members of her political coordination on Sunday (Aug. 9), the head of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency, Edinho Silva, said that the prevailing feeling in the group is one of “unity and political will to consolidate the governing coalition as soon as possible.”

He said the meeting, which lasted about two and a half hours and came in the wake of tension with the governing coalition in Congress, had positive results – it allowed an analysis of the country's political environment in the current scenario of economic difficulties and issues in coordinating the governing coalition.

“The prevailing feeling is one that we won't let interpretations or political use of the governing coalition and the opposition as we see it by a few minority sectors create disturbances or difficulties with our efforts to sustain governance,” the minister said. He also reported that Vice-President Michel Temer, responsible for the government's political coordination, was positive in maintaining his commitment with President Dilma Rousseff and governance at the meeting.

“Everyone recognizes the important role of our vice-president. Today, he plays a key role in building governance,” added Silva. He said the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle was not discussed at the meeting, but President Rousseff is to meet with the chairs of governing coalition parties later this week to consolidate support for the government.

The minister said the government is aware of the difficulties facing the country, but it is confident that Brazil will overcome the economic problems. “No one denies that we are facing difficulties, but they will be overcome so that Brazil, in a short time, can grow again, create jobs and distribute income.”
