Federation on Industries will try to prevent new CPMF
Paulo Skaf, chairman of São Paulo state's Federation on Industries (Fiesp), asserted on Wednesday (Sep. 16) that will do all he can in the coming days to prevent the approval of the new CPMF tax (Temporary Contribution on Financial Transactions), or of any increase in taxes.
Skaf stated that the government tries to raise taxes, so that society pays for the fiscal adjustment but, according to him, society is not willing to pay for it.
While the opposition in the Chamber of Deputies was launching a manifesto against raising the country's tax load, Skaf met Senate President Renan Calheiros and Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha, to ask them to block the proposal. He announced that the private sector will become united on a "strong front" against bringing back the contribution.
In the chairman's view, now the government needs to better manage the resources it already has, and reduce costs and waste.
“To increase taxes and interest and reduce credit is to damage the economy, with a damaged economy, tax collection lowers and a new hole is opened and it never ends. If they can approve a new tax before the end of the year, they will want to create another one, because the hole will go deeper," added Fiesp's chairman.
Public administration
In Skaf's view, the government is reluctant to do what needs to be done, that is, in his opinion, to reduce costs and waste, and to improve the public administration management. "Why is the government so brave to submit constitutional and law changes to raise taxes and is coward to submit law changes to reduce its costs?”
About the government's argument on the CPMF tax being temporary, Fiesp's chairman also reported that he does not believe in raising taxes temporarily and condemned the several possibilities opened up by government officials to raise revenues that entails raising the tax load.
