Judge Sérgio Moro sentenced Tuesday (Mar. 8) contruction tycoon Marcelo Odebrecht—CEO of one of the largest business groups in Brazil—to 19 years and four months in prison for the crimes of passive bribery, conspiracy, and money laundering. The offenses are related to a corruption scheme at Petrobras probed under Operation Car Wash.

"Among the crimes of bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy, substantive joinder of offenses were also reported, for which increased penalties mount to 19 years and four months in prison, which I consider definitive for Marcelo Bahia Odebrecht," said Moro during his sentence.

Also convicted were the following executives from Odebrecht constructing company: Márcio Faria da Silva, Rogério Santos de Araújo, Cesar Ramos Rocha and Alexandrino de Salles Ramos de Alencar; and former Petrobras directors Renato Duque, Paulo Roberto Costa and Pedro Barusco, in addition to currency dealer Alberto Youssef. Paulo Roberto Costa and Alberto Youssef had sentences reduced for having agreed to plea bargains.
