Crowds cheer Chico Buarque at anti-impeachment demonstration in Rio
Singer-songwriter Chico Buarque was at the Rally for Democracy anti-impeachment protest in Largo da Carioca, downtown Rio, and repeated to the crowd that “there will be no coup.” As he appeared on stage, Chico Buarque was cheered by shouts of “Chico, the soldier of the Brazilian people.”
“I am here to embrace people across different tribes and political views. People who voted for the [ruling] Workers' Party, people who do not like the Workers' Party, people who used to be a member of the Workers' Party, those who are disillusioned with the party, people who voted for Dilma, but above all, people who cannot call into question the integrity of President Dilma Rousseff,” he said.
Chico, who has been a legendary icon for the generations who experienced the dictatorship that began in 1964 and has lived in exile, said the people at the demonstration were standing up together for an unwavering defense of democracy. “Right here in this square I see people from my generation who saw the [military coup on] March 31, 1964. But above all, I see so many young people who had not even been born then, but they know the history of Brazil.”
The son of historian Sergio Buarque de Hollanda, Chico Buarque saw dozens of his songs censored by the 1964-1985 dictatorship, some of which have become anthems of protest and the sound of civic campaigns including the Diretas Já movement for direct elections in 1984.
When he left, he repeated his message: “I want to thank you all who make me to believe that no—not again—there will be no coup.”
