Lula: “We'll defeat impeachment and end this crisis once and for all”
Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva filmed Friday (Apr. 15) in Brasília a message to the nation and lawmakers about the Sunday (17) vote on the impeachment proceedings targeting President Dilma Rousseff in the Chamber of Deputies. In the video, the reaffirms his confidence in the victory: “We'll defeat impeachment and end this crisis once and for all.”
Lula says that, as of Monday (18), regardless of government posts, he will stand by Rousseff in the effort to give Brazil a new way of ruling. “In the next stage, I'll use my experience as a former president to help rebuild dialog and bring the country together.”
The former head of state spent the week talking to political leaders in a bid to stop impeachment, and warned lawmakers that the efforts to make the country known for its solid institutions may be brought to naught next Sunday. He urged deputies not to “embark on adventures, believing the siren song of those who sit on the chair ahead of time.”
“Those who break the commitment sealed at the ballot box will not honor deals forged in the shadows. I am convinced the impeachment coup will not pass. To overrule a democratically elected government without an impeachable crime will not solve anything. It only makes the crisis worse.”
Lula admits that “the government is flawed, but the errors must be fixed. But we've already managed to overcome great challenges, and we'll know how to do that once again. We all know the way.”
