Brazil acting President: Funding for culture will increase

Acting President Michel Temer has explained why he turned the Ministry of Culture with Ministry of Education and said this will not reduce cultural activity in the country. In an audio statement released by his press office, Temer criticized the administration of suspended President Dilma Rousseff for leaving behind debt in the culture sector and other areas.
The new Minister of Education and Culture, Mendonça Filho, said that the prior debts of $65 million in the culture sector will be paid.
Michel Temer said the cabinet changes that resulted in the government's department for culture no longer being a standalone ministry are a response to “popular calls” to reduce the size of the cabinet.
“By merging Culture into Education, we had no intention of reducing cultural activity in Brazil. On the contrary, we want to increase funding. Brazil's culture sector will be boosted, not least because the departments in the so-called Culture Secretariat won't change,” he said.
