Acting President Michel Temer nominated diplomat Marcelo Calero to take the reins of the Secretariat for Culture in the new Ministry of Education and Culture.

Calero has been municipal secretary for culture in Rio de Janeiro since last year. He is 33 years old and started his career as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Relations in 2007.

In 2013, he was allowed to work for the Rio de Janeiro city hall under Mayor Eduardo Paes, during which time he was in charge of the celebrations for the city's 450th anniversary.

The abolition of the Ministry of Culture and its incorporation into the Ministry of Education have been received with much criticism among artists and related movements.

In the last few days, federal agencies in capital cities throughout the country have been occupied. Mendonça Filho, minister for education and culture, was called by the Senate to make a statement on the matter.
