Responding to the complaint against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva filed at the Supreme Court by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot, the Lula Institute declared Tuesday (May 3) that Janot already delivered his value judgment when made the complaint. The association denied the former president's connection with any fact probed into the Operation Car Wash (investigating a corruption scheme at the state-led firm Petrobras).

According to the statement issued by the institute, the document submitted by the prosecutor-general "contains only assumptions and hypotheses without any probative value. This is an offensive and unacceptable foretaste of judgment, based solely on the word of a criminal." The charges are mainly based on the statements made by Senator Delcídio do Amaral in his plea bargain.

According to the statement, former president Lula did not participate, directly nor indirectly, of any of the facts under investigation in Operation Car Wash.

"In recent years, Lula is being subject to a thorough inspection. His activities, lectures, trips, bank accounts, absolutely everything has been investigated and nothing illegal or irregular was found. Lula always cooperated with the authorities to get at the truth, even by providing the Prosecutor-General's Office with clarifications," added the document.

The institute concluded the note stating that the former president is "out of debt, out of danger" and is not afraid of being investigated.
