Inter-American Court of Human Rights holds hearings in Brazil

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) opens its 150th Regular Session Period in Brasilia on Tuesday (Aug. 23). Four public hearings on cases judged by the body will be held between August 23 and 26.
The hearings will take place at the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) and deal with four disputes.
Today (Aug. 23), the hearing on the case of the Tagaeri and Taromenane indigenous peoples, who opted for voluntary isolation, against Ecuador will take place. Both indigenous peoples accuse the country of violations in their territories and aggressions to their natural resources and ways of life.
On August 24, the topic will be the case of Oliveira Fuentes vs. Peru. This is the trial about a homosexual who was the target of acts of discrimination for his sexual orientation in a supermarket.
He reported the discrimination to federal agencies, but never got the charges received. The case discusses the possible failure of the country to protect individual freedoms.
On August 25, the Álvarez vs. Argentina case will be analyzed, namely the possible violation of human rights of a man who supposedly did not have enough time to prepare his defense in a judicial proceeding.
Finally, on Friday, August 26, the IACHR will address the case of Garcia Rodriguez and Reyes Alzipar vs. Mexico, in which the country responds for possible violations of due legal process, torture, and deprivation of liberty of two men who were held in temporary custody for more than 17 years.
On Monday (22) a seminar on the IACHR activities in Brazil was held at the Ministry of foreign affairs in Brasilia. This is the third time the IACHR Regular Session Period takes place in the country, Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos França said during the opening of the event. The previous ones were in 2006 and 2013.
