Brazil’s Ambassador to Argentina Júlio Bitelli was summoned to Brasília for consultations on Monday (Jul. 15) by the Brazilian government. In diplomatic language, a call for consultations is a form of protest.

“The ambassador’s trip to the federal capital aims to discuss the main issues in the relationship between Brazil and Argentina in depth and personally with his interlocutors in the Brazilian government,” the official note reads.

In Brasília, the ambassador met with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and President Lula.

The move comes amid a worsening relationship between Presidents Lula and Javier Milei days after the Argentine leader took part in a conservative conference in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina state, which was attended by former president Jair Bolsonaro and members of the Brazilian far-right. On the occasion, President Milei refrained from attending the summit of heads of state of Mercosur countries in Paraguay.

Bitelli is expected to resume his duties in Buenos Aires next week.
