Lula cleared for physical activities and travel
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva underwent new imaging tests on his head Monday (Jan. 27) and was fully cleared to carry out his usual routine, including travel and physical activities. He also had a new CT scan performed at Brasília’s Sírio-Libanês Hospital, following the procedures conducted early in December due to a domestic accident in October 2024.
“The examination shows a new reduction in the [hematoma], compatible with progressive improvement of the condition,” the medical bulletin reads. The president continues to be monitored by the medical team.
On October 19, 2024, the president fell in the bathroom of his official residence and hit his head. In the following weeks, he was subjected to several imaging tests which showed a small intracranial hemorrhage, and he remained under monitoring.
On December 9, the president felt headaches and, after tests, was transferred to São Paulo, where he underwent an emergency trepanation to drain the hematoma. He also had an endovascular procedure to reduce the risk of new bleeding forming in the area between the skull bone and the brain.
On December 15, President Lula was discharged from hospital. He returned to Brasília on December 19, with travel and physical exercise restricted.
Travel
President Lula is due to travel to Russia next May to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In May 1945, the allied troops took Berlin and the representatives of the Nazi regime signed the surrender. The trip to Moscow comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom the Brazilian leader spoke by telephone Monday morning (27).
