Britain to have hospitality house in Rio during Games
The British hospitality house at the Rio 2016 Olympics, known as the British House, will be located at Parque Lage, a heritage building that is home to a state visual arts school in the neighborhood named after the Botanical Garden, in the south part of Rio de Janeiro.
“It will be a fantastic place that will host cultural, business events, parties. It will be an exciting place,” UK Ambassador Alex Ellis announced Tuesday (Jul. 19), speaking at an event at Rio's local shop owners' association. Ellis said Team Great Britain is looking forward to “winning more medals [at Rio 2016] than we did in Beijing. I think there will be thousands of Brits here. I am so glad I'll be attending such a great event.”
The British House is meant to be the British “home away from home” and promote the best of the UK during the games. The project marks a groundbreaking collaboration between the British Olympic Association (BOA), the British Paralympic Association (BPA), the Mayor of London, and the UK government's Great Britain campaign.
The British House will be busy with activity. At one of the events, the City of London will discuss the legacy of London 2012 games and how the Olympic Games have brought about improvement in the city.
Team GB will relax, meet fans and family, and give interviews at the British House.
Also in the program are cultural, promotional, and business initiatives, as well as seminars on major events, energy, education, science and innovation, urban development, digital business, and creative industries, among other areas of interest.
According to the British Embassy in Brasília, the British House will be relocated to the Metropolitano shopping mall in Barra da Tijuca, west Rio, during the Paralympic Games. The Embassy says the UK hospitality house is one of the few foreign national houses that will operate during both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games with busy, wide-ranging programs.
Entry at the house is by invitation. The British Embassy recommends that prospective visitors register at www.britishhouserio.com.
