Brazil will celebrate one of the most anticipated moments in the Olympic Games at Maracanã stadium on Friday (Aug. 5)—the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. It should follow in the tradition of past editions in telling the story of the host country and its people and provide a “round-up of Brazil's popular culture.”

Deborah Colker, one of the most renowned Brazilian choreographers, will be the dance director, whereas the ceremony will be led by celebrated art directors including Fernando Meirelles, Andrucha Waddington, Daniela Thomas, and Rosa Magalhães.

Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha said Brazil is going to stage a great event. “We've successfully made it through the start of the games with no pending issues. All our plans have been carried out. Therefore, we are prepared to stage in Brazil what will certainly be the biggest event ever in our country and one of the world's biggest events on all continents—the Olympic Games,” he said.

The minister commended the preparations and said he was confident about holding the Olympics, noting Brazil has hosted other large-scale international competitions including the Rio 2007 Pan American Games and the FIFA 2014 World Cup. “We are ready to show Brazil knows how to host and organize events. We are sure it will be a very successful event, and we have plenty of confidence in the ability of Brazilians,” Padilha said.
