More than half (51%) of Brazilians aged 15 to 17 years who declared themselves black or brown were in high school in 2014, according to a survey by the NGO Instituto Unibanco based on data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) released last week. In 2001, this percentage was 25%. During the same period, the proportion of white youths in high school rose 14 percentage points—reaching 65%.

In 2001, more than half (53%) of black students aged 15 to 17 years were still studying at the first stage of basic education. Thus they were delayed in comparison with the expected for their age group. In the last PNAD, the percentage dropped 21 points and now the proportion of black youths delayed in their studies at the basic education is 32%. Among whites, this percentage is 22%.

From the total population of 15-17 black youths without study, 15% have completed high school, compared with 28% of white youths within the same range. Among young people in general (all colors), this percentage is 19%.
