Women’s Libertadores: Palmeiras, Boca face off in first final for both
Palmeiras can make history Friday night (Oct. 28) as they compete for the first time for the title of the women’s Libertadores cup. The Palestrinas have the possibility to conquer the Americas in front of another unprecedented finalist, Argetntina’s Boca Juniors, starting at 7 pm Brasília time in Quito, Ecuador.
In its first women’s Libertadores, Palmeiras shown an impressive campaign, with a hundred percent record so far (15 goals scored, only one conceded).
And a possible victory in the continental competition would be the icing on the cake for the comeback of the Palmeiras ladies, who started in 2019. Since then, the team from São Paulo have won the Paulista cup on two occasions (2019, 2021) and was runner-up in the Brazilian Championship (2021).
“We know how important the competition is, and we must give it our best. We’ve worked hard and geared up well. The final’s before us now and we’ll do our best to win,” said fullback Katrine.
On the other side of the field will be another unprecedented finalist, Boca Juniors. The Gladiadoras, as the Argentinian team are known, come into the final with a record of two draws and three wins.
Brazilian hegemony
If Palmeiras win, Brazil will increase its ten-title hegemony in the women’s Libertadores. The teams boasting the most titles in the tournament are Brazilian: Corinthians (2017, 2019, 2021) and São José (2011, 2013, 2014). Santos (2009, 2010), and Ferroviária (2015, 2020) hold two each. Argentina are seeking their first victory in the women’s Libertadores.
