Brazil will count on the support of a high-resolution imaging satellite to strengthen security during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The announcement was made last weekend by Defense Minister Raul Jungmann. According to him, the satellite will allow very detailed inspections on the city during the sporting events.

"This is an Israeli satellite at a low Earth orbit altitude, capable of capturing high-resolution images of up to 50 cm in an area of 450 kilometers, thus enabling the identification of objects, people, cars, and goods," explained Jungmann.

The equipment will be used on an experimental basis for six months as security complement and, in the future, it will support in border surveillance, added the minister.

Brazil's Armed Forces will appoint 38,000 military members to ensure the security of the Olympic Games in Rio, to be held from August 5 to 21. Of this total, 20,000 will work in the host city and the remaining military personnel will be distributed to five other Brazilian cities where male and female football matches will be played: Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Salvador and São Paulo.
