CBF and FIFA mourn death of Carlos Alberto Torres, Brazil's team captain
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued a note expressing its deep regret at the death of Carlos Alberto Torres, Brazil's team captain of the third World Cup win in 1970, this morning (Oct. 25). CBF President Marco Polo Del Nero declared 3-day official mourning for the decease of the player and ordered the CBF flag to half-staff in his honor. One minute of silence will be observed at the beginning of every game of official competitions.
In a statement, the CBF said that "aged 72, Carlos Alberto Torres leaves an enormous legacy of achievements and lots of hard work to support our football. Thank you, Capitain. Your story will always be with us."
FIFA
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) said it was with "tremendous sadness" that they received the news of the player's death. At the cover of the FIFA's website, there was an image of Carlos Alberto Torres hoisting the trophy of the 1970 FIFA World Cup Mexico, along with an extensive report on the captain of the Brazil side.
“The image of the player hoisting the famous Trophy into the air as if it were the most natural thing in the world has become an iconic one, yet it is worth stopping for a moment to consider what it meant to be the captain of such a richly talented side and what an achievement that it was in itself," FIFA pointed out on its website.
Torres, who was currently working as sports commentator for Sport TV, pay-TV channel, died after a heart attack at his home in Rio de Janeiro.
