Rio records coldest early morning since 2016
On Tuesday (Aug. 13), the city of Rio de Janeiro recorded its coldest early morning of the year and the second-lowest temperature in the last decade, as per data from Sistema Alerta Rio, the city’s meteorology agency. In Alto da Boa Vista, a neighborhood in northern Rio, thermometers read 9.1°C.
In the ten-year time series beginning in 2014, the agency reported it had only recorded a lower temperature on June 13, 2016, when it was 8.6°C in the city.
Brazil’s National Meteorological Institute reported even lower temperatures of 8.3°C in the morning in Jacarepaguá, on the west side.
Mayara Vilella, meteorologist at Sistema Alerta Rio, explained that the current weather in the municipality is the result of a polar air mass: “This system is typical of the winter season, and favors the advance of cold air towards the city of Rio de Janeiro, causing the low temperatures recorded in recent days. The situation is expected to continue until at least Wednesday, with colder mornings and gradually rising temperatures over the course of the following days.”
