During his meeting with President Jair Bolsonaro at the White House, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Mar. 19) said he support the efforts made by Brazil to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He also stated that the talks between the two countries are expected to advance in the fields of military security and trade.

Trump said that both countries are working with a number of military issues and issues related to how visas can work better. He added Brazil manufactures great goods “and so do we.” He said he believes trade will go substantially up between the two countries.

The US president said that US and Brazil are experiencing a unique moment in the history of their bilateral ties. He said the relationship he has with Brazil was never better. The US, he went on to say, has a great alliance with Brazil, as never before.

According to Trump, Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign was emblematic. He added that Bolsonaro conducted one of most impressive campaigns in recent times, and compared it to his own victory. Brazil and the US were never as close as they are now, he stated.

When asked about the issue concerning Venezuela, Trump argued that the crisis facing the South American country would be addressed in his talks with Bolsonaro, adding that all options have been laid out on the table, including a military intervention. The Brazilian government has already opposed such a move.

Expectations

During the assembly, Bolsonaro mentioned he was glad to meet with Trump. “I am glad to be in the US after a few decades with some anti-US presidents, Brazil changed in 2019.”

Bolsonaro said the meeting with Trump has a special significance for Brazilians and US citizens. Both have a lot in common, he added.

“We have a lot to talk about and to offer for the good of our nations. We have a lot in common with Mr. Trump. This is reason for pride and satisfaction on my part. He wants America to be great, and I want Brazil to be great. As of now, Brazil will be more than ever engaged with our United States.”

When asked if he had ever imagined he would meet with Trump, Bolsonaro answered, “It’s a miracle to be alive.”
