Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated the president-elect of the US, Donald Trump, on his victory in the election held Tuesday (Nov. 5), when he emerged victorious over Democrat Kamala Harris. While advocating respect for the electoral result, the Brazilian leader wished the future US president luck and success.

“My compliments to President Donald Trump on his electoral victory and return to the presidency of the United States. Democracy is the voice of the people and it must always be respected. The world needs dialog and collaboration for more peace, development, and prosperity. I wish the new government luck and success,” the Brazilian president wrote on his social media.

President Lula had recently expressed his preference for hopeful Kamala Harris. A victory for the Democratic candidate, he argued, would result in a strengthening of democracy.
