Armed Forces to occupy Rio 2016 venue areas on 24
The Armed Forces are set to start a special operation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on July 24. Strategic spots will be controlled by the military in four competition areas.
“Our strategic concentration will be conducted up to July 15. The city will have some 22 thousand men engaged. It is only after July 24, however, at the Olympic Village opening ceremony, that we'll actually be on the streets,” said Colonel Mario Medina, spokesman from the General Coordination for Air Defense, the agency in charge of the military operations during the Games.
Colonel Medina further reports the Army will be tasked with three competition areas: Barra da Tijuca, Deodoro, and Maracanã; and the Navy with Copacabana. The Air Force was assigned the Galeão International Airport.
Today (Jul. 9), 1,500 military agents are performing exercises on patrolling and land reconnaissance in several locations across the city. One of the goals today is tracing routs between the Olympic venues and estimating their duration.
